Schaumstoff-HME-Filter spielen bei der Aufrechterhaltung einer konsistenten und kontrollierten Sauerstoff- und Gasaufnahme in der An\u00e4sthesie, auf Intensiv-, Notfall-, Neugeborenenstationen sowie in der h\u00e4uslichen Krankenpflege eine wichtige Rolle. Zus\u00e4tzlich zur Filterung von Staub und anderen gr\u00f6\u00dferen Schwebeteilchen, vermindern HME-Filter den Feuchtigkeitsverlust und behalten einen Teil der Feuchtigkeit und W\u00e4rme innerhalb der Atemwege; auch helfen sie dabei, den Widerstand zum Luftstroms zu verst\u00e4rken. HME-Ger\u00e4te, die bei mechanisch beatmeten Patienten eingesetzt werden, sollen helfen, durch das Austrocknen der Atemschleimhaut verursachte Komplikationen, wie Schleimverstopfung und eine Okklusion des endotrachealen Tubus, zu verhindern. Die Hauptbestandteile von W\u00e4rme- und Feuchtigkeitsaustauschger\u00e4ten sind Schaumstoff, Papier oder ein Stoff, der als Kondensations- und Absorptionsfl\u00e4che wirkt. Bei mechanisch beatmeten Patienten sind Befeuchtung und Absaugen wichtig, um die Sekretbildung unter Kontrolle zu halten.
